About Eagles Fly for Leukemia

Introduction | History | Flying High | Organizational "Wings"

For over thirty years, Eagles Fly for Leukemia has supported pediatric cancer and leukemia research in the Delaware Valley, helping their world renowned scientists in the quest for a cure. Eagles Fly for Leukemia has donated over six million dollars to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, St. Christopher's Hospital, A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children and the Ronald McDonald Houses of Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey toward the ultimate goal of abolishing childhood cancers and enhancing the lives of children in our community.

Eagles Fly for Leukemia has helped hundreds of families, through the Family Support Fund, with direct financial assistance to alleviate the non-medical expenses related to caring for children with cancer. Families not only endure emotional and physical traumas as a result of their child's illness, but, financial trauma and stress as well. As a direct result of cancer treatments, many necessary expenses incurred are not covered by medical insurance. The Family Support Fund provides monies for these non-medical, essential expenses which are not covered by insurance or other agencies.

In the US, men have a 1 in 2 lifetime risk of developing cancer, and for women the risk is 1 in 3. Leukemia, cancer of the blood producing tissues, makes up the largest share of cancer cases and is the number one disease killer of children. The treatment of childhood cancer has greatly advanced since the 1950's when most children with leukemia lived only three to six months after diagnosis. Today, about 85% of children with leukemia and more than 60% of all children with cancer will survive five years or longer. Many will be cured completely.

Eagles Fly for Leukemia awards three $1,500 Kim Hill Scholarships and one full scholarship to St. Joseph's University and Drexel University. The scholarships are given to survivors of childhood cancer. In 1998, St. Joseph's University generously donated a full scholarship to Eagles Fly for Leukemia in perpetuity.

The true representation of our organization is in the faces of the children we are helping. We are proud to boast that the dollars we raise are used to support research locally. The Delaware Valley will profit from your involvement. These children are tackling one of the toughest opponents anyone can face. Childhood is a fleeting moment and Eagles Fly for Leukemia is working to assure that the children of the future will have the time to enjoy it.

We urge you to spread your wings and support Eagles Fly for Leukemia.
